Tuckahoe Plantation Engagement

May 15, 2019

Located just outside Richmond, Virginia, Tuckahoe Plantation is the ideal backdrop for spring engagement portraits. David Abel Weddings captured Selene and Michael’s engagement surrounded by the gardens and rich history of Thomas Jefferson’s boyhood home. Tuckahoe Plantation EngagementTuckahoe Plantation EngagementTuckahoe Plantation EngagementHow did you meet? Michael and I met almost 10 years ago when we were both sophomores at the University of Michigan. The first night we met, I had accompanied a friend to her sorority/fraternity mixer at the frat house (typical college story, i know..), which happened to be Michael’s fraternity. After casually meeting him, I spent a majority of the night actually trying to set him up with my good friend, unbeknownst to him. Over the next couple weeks, we “accidentally” ran into each other several more times at other friends’ houses, the library, etc. Later on I found out he was texting his friends to ask if I was there, and would come running over if they said yes. While I was still trying to set him up with my friend, his pursuit of me became obvious. I was in a long term relationship at the time, but it was not going well and eventually I gave in and let Michael take me on a date.Tuckahoe Plantation EngagementTuckahoe Plantation EngagementTuckahoe Plantation EngagementWhat is your proposal story? There is an orchard near our old apartment in Charlottesville that overlooks the city and has the best peach soft serve in town. Carter Mountain was somewhere we liked to go frequently on the weekends or days off together, especially when the weather was nice and we could sit on the grass with our dog and sip on a cold cider or have an ice cream cone. It was December 2016 and Michael was insistent on going to Carter Mountain one weekend. I was pleasantly surprised, since I was usually the one who would encourage us to go. When we got there, he kept pushing that we really should get a photo of us in front of the view (even though it was pretty overcast and I was not really feeling it). I suggested we ask a nice young boy a few feet away, but Michael was adamant that it had to be “someone older who would take a better photo.” When he went inside to find someone, I stayed outside with our dog and started to feel strangely intrigued that something was maybe about to happen. I saw him walking back out looking a bit nervous, and within 30 seconds he was on his knee and pulled out the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen. The whole moment was a whirlwind, he just spit the words out “will you marry me?” and I could barely answer before I started crying (happy tears of course!!!). The lovely lady he had asked to take our photo did a fabulous job capturing the whole thing, and the audience of guests in the orchard lodge clapped and cheered and brought us a bottle of champagne to our surprise! Michael had set up the whole evening, with a romantic dinner at the Clifton Inn to follow. I cried a lot but I’ve never been happier (until our wedding day).Tuckahoe Plantation EngagementTuckahoe Plantation EngagementTuckahoe Plantation Engagement
